BUG: BCP IN May Insert More Characters Than Column Allows

ID: Q137429

The information in this article applies to:

BUG# NT: 11131 (6.00)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0, character mode BCP into a table with nullable char or varchar columns may insert more characters into the column than the column definition allows.

WORKAROUND

Make sure the data is not wider than the column definition, or you can use the 4.2 version of BCP and DB-Library.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

An example of the problem is a table defined with a char(1) column and an int column, and then data of the format:

   abcd,1
   efgh,2

Selecting from the table after the BCP IN retrieves all four characters from the char(1) column.
