BUG: Mac ODBC App Via TCP/IP May Cause Connections to Hang

SYMPTOMS

A Macintosh ODBC application connected to SQL Server using TCP/IP sockets may cause other SQL Server connections to hang when you run certain queries, such as sp_who.

For instance, when Microsoft Query is used to send ad hoc queries, such as sp_who to SQL Server, the Macintosh client may hang after repeating this query a few times. When this occurs, other TCP/IP sockets clients can still connect to the SQL Server, but any attempts to run any SQL commands will cause that client to hang. After this, all existing connections will hang, whether they are TCP/IP sockets clients or not. New connections can still be made, but they will hang if you try to execute any SQL commands.


WORKAROUND

An alternative way of connecting to SQL Server from a Macintosh client is to use AppleTalk protocol ADSP. The ADSP Network Library (Net-Library) is also provided together with the TCP/IP sockets Net-Library for the Macintosh.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server version 4.21a. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
