BUG: SEM Allows You to Subscribe Without Specifying DB Name

ID: Q142453

The information in this article applies to:

BUG# NT: 11338 (6.00)

SYMPTOMS

SQL Enterprise Manager allows you to subscribe to a publication without specifying a subscription database. This causes SQL Executive to report the error:

Attempt to locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'automatic' failed.

WORKAROUND

Ensure that a subscribing database is specified while subscribing to an article or a publication.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server Version 6.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Under manage subscriptions, while subscribing to an article, even if no database name is given SQL Enterprise Manager allows the user to subscribe. This does not generate any errors and it adds "automatic" as the subscriber_db in the replication tables (such as MSjob_subscriptions, MSsubscriber_jobs, etc).

This causes SQL Executive to generates errors mentioning that "attempt to locate entry in sysdatabases for database 'automatic' failed."
