BUG: Win16 DB-Library DLL May Incorrectly Load NWIPXSPX.DLL

SYMPTOMS

Under certain situations, the following error may occur when running a DB-Library application for Windows:

Can not find NWIPXSPX.DLL

If you click the OK button, the connection to SQL Server can still be made, and everything else works fine.


CAUSE

The 16-bit DB-Library DLL for Windows (that is, W3DBLIB.DLL or MSDBLIB3.DLL) that ships with SQL Server 6.0 may incorrectly try to load NWIPXSPX.DLL under certain situations.


WORKAROUND

The NWIPXSPX.DLL file ships with Microsoft SQL Server 16-bit client tools. This DLL is installed by default in the same directory as the 16-bit SQL Server tools. If you do not have this DLL installed for some reason, you need to copy it from the installation disk or CD-ROM to the local directory or any directory in the path.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft SQL Server version 6.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.


MORE INFORMATION

This should not be a common problem because the NWIPXSPX.DLL file is copied automatically to the client computer when you run the client setup. Even if the NWIPXSPX.DLL file is needed in the path, it is not actually loaded into memory, and therefore no additional resources are used.
