The following information discusses how the substring() function for
string functions allows the user to store data in a binary field and
then interpret the data 1 or more bytes at a time.
The syntax for the substring() function is listed below:
   substring(colname,starting position,length) 
For example, to get 2 bytes starting from the fifth position from a
field called "bindata," use the following statement:
   select substring(bindata,5,2)
