SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, a defined name cannot be created with the name "C" or "R". If this is attempted, Excel will display a dialog box stating "That Name Is Not Valid." A defined name such as "R12XYZ" will cause the error dialog box to be displayed.

The characters "C" and "R" are reserved for use in "R1C1" notation.

Any name that could be confused with a cell reference is invalid. Any name that begins with a number is also invalid. Examples of names that cannot be used are "C", "R", "RC", "A1", "AB2", "DF24", "ZZ140", "1A", and "22Name".

The macro commands DEFINE.NAME and SET.NAME, which are used to define names, are also restricted by the above conditions. If a name is invalid, a macro error will result, indicating the cell on the macro sheet that contains the DEFINE.NAME or SET.NAME formula.
