XL5: Calculate Method for Range Object Fails on Protected Sheet

SYMPTOMS

In the versions of Microsoft Excel listed at the beginning of this article, when you use the Calculate method in a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications macro, this method may fail to work when you calculate a range.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Calculate method fails when the worksheet is protected and calculation is set to manual.

Method 1

To properly calculate a range on the worksheet, you can unprotect the sheet prior to calculating the range and then protect the sheet again once calculation is complete. The following macro demonstrates how this can be accomplished programmatically:

   Sub CalcRange()

       'Unprotect Sheet1
       Worksheets("Sheet1").Unprotect Password:= "test"

       'Calculate the range A1:A5 on Sheet1
       Worksheets("Sheet1").Range("A1:A5").Calculate

       'Protect Sheet1
       Worksheets("Sheet1").Protect Password:= "test"

   End Sub

Method 2

You can calculate the entire sheet manually by pressing F9, or you can use the following Visual Basic for Applications code:

   Worksheets("Sheet1").Calculate

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0 and later.
