XL97: XLDialogOpen Constant Causes Error When Opening XLTs

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Excel 97 Visual Basic for Applications constant XlDialogOpen, you may receive the following error message:

   This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
   If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.

If you click Details, you receive an error message similar to the following:

   EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at
   0137:bff76774.

CAUSE

This error may occur when you use the constant XlDialogOpen to display the Open dialog box, and then try to open a built-in or custom template.

NOTE: This error also occurs in Microsoft Excel 97 for Windows, Service Release 1.

The following Sub procedure displays the Open dialog box from the File menu, but does not cause the illegal operation error to occur when you open template files.

   ' X represents the file name to open or will equal False if Cancel is
   ' clicked.
   X = Application.GetOpenFilename("Templates Files (*.xlt), *.xlt")
   ' Open the template if Cancel button was not pressed.
   If X<>FALSE Then Workbooks.Open X
End Sub

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
