Excel: Black Border Prints with Gridlines

SUMMARY

If the Gridlines option is selected in the Page Setup dialog box, Excel prints a black border around the print area as well as gridlines outlining each individual cell. If Gridlines is not selected, Excel 3.0 does not print the border around the print area.

In Excel 3.0, individual cell gridlines can be masked from displaying and printing by setting a white foreground or background pattern. The black border around the printed page, however, will always print unless Print Gridlines is canceled in the Page Setup dialog box.

More Information:

In order to avoid the black border around the printed spreadsheet and still print cell gridlines for some cells and not for others:

  1. Choose Page Setup from the File menu.

  2. Make sure Print Gridlines is not selected and choose the OK button.

  3. On the spreadsheet, select the cells which should have outlines printed around them.

  4. Choose Borders from the Format Menu.

  5. Select Left, Right, Top, and Bottom. Choose the OK button.

Note: The choice to display gridlines or not can be made by choosing Display from the Options menu and selecting or canceling Gridlines. This does not affect whether or not Gridlines are printed.
