BUG: CL.DEF Not Copied from CD Causes LINK Fatal Error L1092

SYMPTOMS

You receive the following LINK error when building a QuickWin application:

   LINK : fatal error L1092: cannot open module-definition
   file - ..\MSVC\BIN\CL.DEF

CAUSE

When performing a minimal installation from the Visual C++ version 1.50 CD, the setup program doesn't copy the CL.DEF file to the \MSVC\BIN directory on the hard disk.

RESOLUTION

Copy the CL.DEF file manually from the CD to the \MSVC\BIN directory on the hard disk from the \MSVC\BIN directory on the CD.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in Visual C++ version 1.5. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

After a minimal installation, Visual C inserts the full path to the CL.DEF file into the project's makefile when creating a new QuickWin project or scanning a project's dependencies. For example:

   DEFFILE=C:\MSVC\BIN\CL.DEF
