BUG: Visual Workbench Interprets /* in a String as a Comment

The information in this article applies to:

• The Visual Workbench included with: Microsoft Visual C++ for Windows, versions 1.0, 1.5, and 1.51

SYMPTOMS

The Visual Workbench uses color coded syntax to make programming easier. If "/*" (without the quotation marks) is part of a literal string, the development environment interprets it as the beginning of a comment and changes the color of all the text in the file until the environment finds a matching "*/" (without the quotation marks) to end the comment. The sample code in the More Information section below illustrates this problem.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a bug in the products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

This is not a problem in Visual C++ 32-bit Edition.
