Excel: Displaying Insignificant, Leading Zeros

SUMMARY

To get Microsoft Excel to display insignificant zeros at the beginning of a number (for example, "00123"), one of two methods must be used.

Method 1

  1. From the Format menu, choose Number.

  2. In the Format box, type the same number of zeros as there are digits in the numbers to be entered.

  3. Click OK.

Method 2

Enter the numbers as text by putting a hard space before the numbers. (To create a hard space, press OPTION+SPACEBAR.)
