Excel: Formatting Not Transferred Between Linked Worksheets

SUMMARY

When linking worksheets in Microsoft Excel, formatting (bold, italic, etc.) from the supporting worksheet is not retained in the dependent worksheet. For example, if you type "name" in bold in cell A1 of Worksheet 1 and then enter "=Worksheet1!$A$1" in cell A1 of Worksheet 2, "name" appears in cell A1 of Worksheet 2 without bold formatting.

To transfer the formatting to the dependent worksheet after linking the documents, do the following:

  1. Copy the cells in the supporting worksheet.

  2. Select the first cell of the range in the dependent worksheet.

  3. From the Edit menu, choose Paste Special.

  4. Select Formats and click OK.

Excel does not automatically retain the formatting in the dependent worksheet in order to allow you to link information between documents without requiring the same formatting characteristics.
