PRB: Starting Books Online May Take Minutes to Load

SYMPTOMS

The "Microsoft Visual C++" Windows Program Manager group, which is installed with Visual C++ version 1.5, contains an icon called "Books Online." When double-clicking the icon to start the viewer for online books, the computer may appear to hang.

CAUSE

The Contents window for the online books may require 1-3 minutes to load.

RESOLUTION

Let the system continue to execute and the Contents window will eventually appear.

To improve the speed for loading the book viewer, copy the necessary files to a hard drive or network drive. To do this, perform the following steps (you'll need approximately 55 megabytes of free disk space):

1. Copy VCBKS15.HDX, VCBKS15.HLP, VCBKS15.IND, and VCSDK15.HLP, located on

   the CD in the \MSVC\HELP directory, to a hard drive or network drive.

2. Modify the CONTENTS.INI file located in the Windows directory. You will

   see two sections in the CONTENTS.INI file: [VCBKS15] and [VCSDK15].
   Both sections contain a "Path=" statement. After each Path= statement,
   specify the directory where you placed the files from step 1. For
   example, your CONTENTS.INI file might resemble the following:

      [VCBKS15]
      Path=D:\MSVC\HELP\ 
          .
          .
          .
      [VCSDK15]
      Path=D:\MSVC\HELP\
