Excel: Importing TIF Formatted Graphic

SUMMARY

In versions of Microsoft Excel earlier than version 5.0, you cannot directly import a .TIF formatted graphic into Excel for Windows. The following procedure describes how to convert a .TIF file from Word for Windows version 1.1a into the Windows metafile format, which Excel is able to import.

NOTE: In Microsoft Excel version 5.0, you can import graphic files including TIF formatted graphics by choosing the Picture command from the Insert menu.

You must have Microsoft Word for Windows 1.1a and its .TIF filter installed. To determine if this filter has been installed, look for the following lines in the WIN.INI file (located in your WINDOWS directory): 


   [WWFilters]
   TIFF FILTER=TIFF.FLT,TIF


Note that the WIN.INI file can be viewed or edited in any text editor, such as the Notepad program.

To import a .TIF file into Excel, follow the steps described below:

  1. Open Word for Windows.


  2. From the Insert menu, choose Picture.


  3. Enter the path of the desired .TIF file. Choose OK.


  4. Choose the desired graphic image.


  5. Press CTRL+SHIFT+F9 simultaneously. This will convert the .TIF file to the Windows metafile format.


  6. From the Edit menu, choose Copy.


  7. Minimize Word for Windows and open the desired spreadsheet in Excel.


  8. From the Edit menu, choose Paste.


The image will appear in the worksheet.
