Excel: Installing onto a Network may Result in -50 error
ID: Q85880

The information in this article applies to:
-
Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 4.0
SUMMARY
When installing Excel 4.0 to an AppleShare, LAN Manager, Novell, or
other network server using the second network install option (which
allows users to run Microsoft Excel from the server), the setup may
stop with a -50 error after it has finished copying all seven disks to
the server. Upon receiving this error, the Excel Setup may then return
an error -51. This error does not occur if using the first network
install option (which allows users to install Microsoft Excel from the
server) is used.
MORE INFORMATION
To work around this problem when choosing the second network install
option, follow these steps:
- Insert "Disk 1-Setup" and run "Microsoft Excel Setup."
- When the registration dialog box is presented, enter your name
and organization, if it hasn't already been entered, and choose
the OK button.
- The setup will then ask what type of Excel installation you would
like. Choose Network.
- From the "Installing Microsoft Excel to a Network" dialog box,
choose the second network install option, "Allow users to run
Microsoft Excel from the server."
- When asked to select a disk and a folder in which to install Excel,
select a folder on your own hard drive.
- When it is done installing to the folder on the hard drive, copy
the folder to the server where you wanted to have Excel installed
and then remove the copy that is on your own hard drive.
Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information
here as it becomes available.
