Excel: Problems with Filenames that Contain Backslashes

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 1.5 and 2.2.

In Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh versions 2.2 and earlier, the backslash key (\) may cause problems in document names. The following problems may occur:

  • A macro in Excel may not be able to find the document even if the document is already open.

    -or-

  • A #REF! may appear in cells linked to document names containing backslashes.

To correct these problems, remove the backslash from the document name.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh versions 1.5 and 2.2. This problem was corrected in Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh version 3.0.
