Excel: Server Installation Button Not Available on OS/2 Server

Last reviewed: September 12, 1996

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.0a
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, version 2.0a, 2.0b, 2.0c

SUMMARY

When you attempt to install applications such as Microsoft Excel for Windows or Microsoft Word for Windows on a network server that is running any network operating system from a workstation running IBM OS/2 2.0 and the IBM Win-OS/2 3.0 support, the Server Installation button will not appear.

Some setup programs detect that the drive you are installing to is a network drive -- this prompts the program to display the Server Install button. However, OS/2 version 2.0 does not report to the MS-DOS subsystem (from which Win-OS/2 receives information) that the drive you are installing to is a network drive. As a result, the MS-DOS subsystem and Win-OS/2 view the drive as another logical drive and the Server Installation button is not displayed.

MORE INFORMATION

IBM Technical Support has confirmed this to be a problem in OS/2 version 2.0. This problem has been corrected in OS/2 version 2.1. For more information, please contact IBM Technical Support at (800) 237-5511.

The OS/2 Operating System is manufactured by IBM, a company independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.
