Introduction

The WG1129 disk included with this Application Note contains six updated Windows for Workgroups 3.11 files that are shipped on the CD-ROM version of Microsoft Windows NT Server 3.5. These updated files provide the following improvements:

  • Support for named pipes over direct host IPX
  • Performance enhancements to direct host IPX
  • A patch to prevent browse masters from synchronizing and announcing simultaneously
  • Changes to allow Windows NT remote administrators to work on Windows for Workgroups
  • Changes to allow browsing of Windows NT workgroups outside a subnet
  • Changes to allow Windows NT 3.5 servers to screen out older Windows for Workgroups clients trying to connect through direct host IPX

To install the updated files

  1. If you received a disk with this Application Note, insert the disk in the appropriate floppy disk drive.

If you downloaded this Application Note from an online service, skip to step 2. This procedure assumes that you have already downloaded and extracted the compressed file.

  2. At the MS-DOS command prompt, type the following and press ENTER

          copy <source>:\net.exe <location>

where <source> is either the letter of your floppy disk drive or the directory containing the file you downloaded from online services, and <location> is the path to your Windows directory. For example, if you are installing from a floppy disk that you inserted in drive A, and C:\WINDOWS is the path to your Windows directory:

          copy a:\net.exe c:\windows

Or, for example, if you downloaded the WG1129.EXE file from online services to C:\DOWNLOAD and C:WINDOWS is the path to your Windows directory:

          copy c:\download\net.exe c:\windows

  3. Copy the remaining five files to the Windows SYSTEM subdirectory one at a time. For example, type the following commands and press ENTER after each one:

          copy a:\ndis.386 c:\windows\system
          copy a:\netapi.dll c:\windows\system
          copy a:\nwnblink.386 c:\windows\system
          copy a:\vnetsup.386 c:\windows\system
          copy a:\vredir.386 c:\windows\system

The table below lists the new file sizes and dates:

          File Size Date
                         (bytes)
