Excel: Text Alignment Options Don't Affect Attached Chart Text

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh versions 1.5, 2.2, and 3.0, the alignment options under Text on the Format menu do not affect the appearance of attached chart text even though they work as expected for unattached text.

The alignment options move text up, down, left, or right relative to the area containing the text. For attached text, this area is determined by the text itself, so the text has nowhere to move inside its defined area. The area containing unattached text can be sized manually, allowing the text to be placed in different positions.

MORE INFORMATION

If you need to reposition labels for chart series points, axes, or the title, use one of the following methods:

Method 1

Insert linefeeds (new line characters) inside the text box by pressing COMMAND+RETURN. This will move the text up if the linefeed is after the text and down if it is placed before the text. Press the SPACEBAR to move text left or right.

Method 2

Use unattached text, which can be positioned anywhere in the chart.

For more information on creating and manipulating chart text, see pages 472-479 in the "Microsoft Excel User's Guide" version 3.0 manual or pages 334-336 in the "Microsoft Excel Reference" version 2.2 manual.
