Excel: Text Box Rotates Whenever Selected

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, when the mouse pointer is located within a text box with sideways or rotated text, and the mouse button is clicked, the text box automatically rotates to a right-left orientation for easier editing.

This may not be desirable in all circumstances. To prevent the text box from rotating, do the following:

  1. From the Options menu, choose Protect Document.

  2. Select the Objects option.

  3. If you want to able to edit the document, deselect the Cells option.

  4. If desired, enter a password in the Password edit box. A password is not required.

  5. Click OK.

The text box will no longer rotate when clicked. It should be noted that it is no longer possible to select the text box (or any other graphics object on the worksheet).

To unprotect the text box, do the following:

  1. From the Options menu, choose Unprotect Document.

  2. If a password was entered in step 4 above, a prompt for the password will appear at this point. Enter the password.

The text box and other graphics objects are once again selectable.
