Excel: Tutorial Can't Be Completed If TrueType Only Is Enabled

SUMMARY

The tutorial for Microsoft Excel version 3.0 cannot be completed successfully if the Show only TrueType Fonts In Applications option, is selected in Windows Control Panel.

Specifically, in the tutorial section titled "Using a Worksheet," the tutorial prompts you to choose a font size of 12. However, the size list is blank and the scroll bars are unavailable (dimmed). A dialog box will display the message "In the size box, click 12." Because you cannot select or type 12 in the size box, the only alternative is to choose the Controls button or press CTRL+F1 to get out of the module.

The tutorial in Microsoft Excel version 3.0 is designed to display Helvetica as a font choice, which is a screen font. When Show Only TrueType Fonts In Applications is chosen in the Windows Control Panel under Fonts, screen fonts are not available in the font list box.

To complete the tutorial successfully, clear the Show Only TrueType Fonts In Applications check box in the Fonts section of Windows Control Panel.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

  1. From the Main group in Program Manager, start Control Panel.

  2. From Control Panel, choose the Fonts icon.

  3. Choose the True Type button and select the Show Only TrueType Fonts In Applications check box.

  4. In Microsoft Excel, choose Tutorial from the Help menu.

  5. Choose option number 2, WorkSheets.

  6. Choose choice number 2, Using a Worksheet.

  7. Follow the instructions in the tutorial.

After you type "Total Lunch Earnings," a dialog box asks you to choose the Font command from the Format menu and you receive the dialog box instructing you to select 12 in the Size box.
