Excel: Using Color Tool Changes Weight of Graphic Lines

SYMPTOMS

In version 4.0 of Microsoft Excel, when you use the Color tool to change the color of a graphic line or arrow, the weight (thickness) of the line or arrow may be changed as well; the weight of the line or arrow will revert to the default line weight when the color tool sets the color of the object to the first color in the color palette.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, reformat the line to the desired thickness.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was corrected in a later version of Microsoft Excel.

The Color tool changes the foreground color of a selected object or cell. When you choose the Color tool, it cycles through the sixteen colors currently assigned to the worksheet. When you cycle through the first color, Microsoft Excel resets the line format to Automatic which results in your line being reset to the default weight.

To reformat your line

1. Select the line.



2. From the Format menu, choose Patterns.



3. In the Patterns dialog box, choose the Custom option and select the desired line color and weight.



4. Choose the OK button.
