Incorrect Line Extensions in X-Y Scatter Charts

When using the #2 scatter chart in Microsoft Excel, lines extending from the last data point to the edge of the chart may not display correctly.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

Type the following into a worksheet:


      A1: 10          B1: 10
      A2: 100         B2: 100
      A3: 1000        B3: 1000
      A4: 10000       B4: 10000

Select cells A1:B4.

From the File menu, choose New and then Chart. In Excel 3.0, select "X-Values for X-Y Chart". In all versions, choose Scatter from the Gallery menu and select Number 2.

Change the scale on each axis, setting the maximum to 1500:

a. Select the X-axis.
b. From the Format menu, choose Scale.
c. Type 1500 in the Maximum box. Choose OK.
d. Follow the same steps for the Y-axis.

Depending on the height and width of the chart window, the last segment of the line (extending from the last data point) may not be in alignment with the rest of the line. This behavior may occur even though the graph should be a straight diagonal through the chart because the data is of the form x=y.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.

Workaround

Size your chart window so that it is in the shape of a square, or as close as possible. This will give the appearance of a straight line. Before printing the chart, verify that Screen Size or Fit To Page is chosen under Page Setup from the File menu. Selecting Full Page may cause the printout to become distorted.
