SUMMARY

In Microsoft Excel, you can create an external reference to a worksheet so that you can use text from that worksheet as the title of a chart. When you use this method, any changes you make to the text on the worksheet are reflected automatically in the chart title.

MORE INFORMATION

On a chart, you can create external references to the worksheet that contains the desired text by including an external reference in the formula bar to the cell on the worksheet that you would like to use for the title. For example, if you have a worksheet named SAMPLE.XLS and that worksheet contains the text (in Cell A1) that you want to use as the title for a chart, do the following:

Microsoft Excel version 5.0

  1. In the chart, choose Titles from the Insert menu.

  2. Select the Chart Title check box, and choose OK.

  3. Enter the external reference =SAMPLE.XLS!$A$1 in the formula bar.

Microsoft Excel versions 2.x, 3.0 and 4.0

  1. In the chart, choose Attach Text from the Chart menu.

  2. Select the Chart Title option in the Attach Text dialog box, and choose OK.

  3. Enter the external formula =SAMPLE.XLS!$A$1 in the formula bar.

This same method can also be used for unattached text.
