Modifying Hi-Low Close-Volume Chart so Volume Uses Line Format

ID: Q72871

The information in this article applies to:

SUMMARY

With the default hi-lo close-volume chart in Microsoft Excel, the volume is always represented as columns. To modify the chart so that volume is represented by a line instead of columns, choose Main Chart from the Format menu and change the main chart type from Column to Line.

MORE INFORMATION

A hi-lo close-volume chart is created by using four series of data. The default format for a hi-lo close-volume chart is the Fifth Combination command in the Gallery menu. It displays the volume (4th series) in the column format. When you use a combination chart, each series is separated into a main chart and an overlay. In a hi-lo close-volume chart, the volume is the main chart and the hi, low, and close series make up the overlay. To modify the volume, modify the main chart.

For example:

  1. Using four columns of data from your worksheet, create a chart.

  2. From the Gallery menu, choose Combination and select the fifth option.

  3. From the Format menu, choose Main Chart.

  4. From the Main Chart Type box, select Line. Choose OK.
