Cannot Shut Down System while Formatting Tape

Last reviewed: May 16, 1997
Article ID: Q118422
The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

When you format a tape with the Windows NT 3.1 backup program, the server does not shut down when you choose the system shutdown menu option.

Once the backup program begins formatting the tape, the device (in this case, the tape drive) continues to format the tape and does not respond to the system until it has completed that task or thread. If you attempt to shut down the server, it will not respond until it has completed formatting the tape.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
