The information in this article applies to:
In Microsoft Query version 1.0, you may receive the following error message:
% SQL-F-ILLCHAR, Illegal Character Detected
This error message may be displayed if you query a DEC Rdb data source
using any of the following ODBC drivers:
- DEC ODBC driver, version 1.10 - Oracle ODBC driver, version 2.0
If you are using version 1.01.2115 of the DEC ODBC driver, you will receive the following error message:
& SQL-F-ILLCHAR, Illegal Character Detected
There is a setting in the [DEC ODBC Driver] section of the WIN.INI file that allows you to enable or disable support for control characters. To obtain these settings, contact DEC Technical Support at (800)354-9000.
The DEC ODBC (Open Database Connectivity) driver is manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation, a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.
Microsoft Query sends SQL statements containing control characters and when DEC SQL receives an SQL statement with control characters, it sends back the above error message. Version 1.10 of the DEC ODBC Driver has a feature that will strip out any control characters in an SQL statement before it sends the statement to an Rdb database.
