MSQuery: Cannot Create Index with Text ODBC Data Source

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

In the versions of Microsoft Query listed at the beginning of this article, when you save a query result to a text data source, you may receive one of the following error messages. The error message you receive depends on the version of the Text ODBC driver you are using.


   Version of text

     ODBC driver     Error message
   ---------------   ---------------------------------------------------
        1.0          Create index statement not supported.
        2.0          Feature not available.
        3.0          Operation is not supported for this type of object.

You may also receive the following error message:

Unsupported SQL command statement.

CAUSE

Text data sources do not support the use of indexes. Therefore, when you attempt to create an index for a text data source, Microsoft Query displays the error messages described above.

RESOLUTION

To avoid receiving these errors, turn the Save Indexes option off in the Save As dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Even if you receive the error messages stated above, Microsoft Query continues to save the query result to the specified text file. However, no index is created for the file.
