SYMPTOMS

The following error message may appear when you attempt to run the CBT of Excel 5.0 under Windows NT by choosing Examples And Demos from the Help menu, and then selecting any topic:

   You cannot run the CBT with this operating system.

This error message does not appear if you choose Quick Preview from the Help menu, but your system may still stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

The Excel 5.0 CBT is not designed to run under Windows NT; this is to avoid direct access to graphics or any other devices. Excel 5.0 CBT is not recommended to run under Windows NT.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior and to run the Excel 5.0 CBT under Windows NT, do the following steps:

  1. Create an EXCELCBT subdirectory under the EXCEL directory.

  2. Copy all the files from the EXCELCBT subdirectory from a Windows or Windows for Workgroups computer.

  3. Edit the EXCEL5.INI file to have

          CBTLOCATION = <drive>:\EXCEL\EXCELCBT

    in [Microsoft Excel] section.

  4. Run Excel and the CBT by choosing Example and Demos from the Help menu.

The CBT should run fine after you have completed the above steps.
