MXL5: How to Install MS Excel for the Macintosh 15-Digit Patch

This article contains the steps necessary to set up and install the 15- Digit Patch for Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh. As of 5/20/96, the patch is available only through Microsoft Technical Support; therefore, this article assumes you will be installing the patch from floppy disks.

To set up the 15-digit patch, follow these steps:

1. Restart your computer with all unnecessary extensions disabled.

For most computers, starting with the Shift key pressed while you restart is the best way.

2. Insert Disk 1 of your 15-digit patch disks.

3. Based on your current installation of Microsoft Excel, double-click the 

   appropriate setup file listed in the table below:

4. Click Continue in the first window that appears.

5. In the next window, choose the folder in which to install the patch.

Note that this folder should be the folder in which the current installation of Microsoft Excel resides. Also, make sure that in this window, you use "Microsoft Excel" in the "Unstuff as:" edit box. This will overwrite the existing version of Microsoft Excel, and you will not have to worry about having multiple instances of the same program on your computer.

6. Click Save.

7. When prompted as to whether or not you want to replace the existing 

   version of Microsoft Excel, click Replace.
The install program will then unstuff all the necessary files from the disks, and you will prompted to insert Disk 2, Disk 3 (also Disks 4 and 5 if you are doing a FAT install), and then Disk 1 again.

8. Once the installation is successful, click Quit.

NOTE: You can also copy all of the .sea files that are on the floppy disks into a single folder on your hard disk. You then double click the .sea file in this folder that has a "1" (without the quotation marks) in the icon (it is the same .sea file that is on Disk 1). Then, you do steps 4-8, except you will not be prompted for disks because they will each find the next one in the sequence.
