Long Filenames May Be Truncated in Windows NT Backup Display

SYMPTOMS

In the Windows NT Backup utility, when you restore files created under the HPFS or NTFS file systems that have very long filenames, it is not possible to view the entire filenames because there is no horizontal scroll bar. Long filenames may extend past the edge of the window.

NOTE: A similar problem may also occur in File Manager.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT version 3.1 and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

1. Using File Manager on an NTFS or HPFS partition, create a

   directory named TEST.

2. Using Notepad from the Accessories group, create the following file
   and save it in the TEST directory.

   ABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEF
   GHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJAB
   CDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGHIJABCDEFGH
   IJ.TXT

   NOTE: To create this filename, copy ABCDEFGHIJ to the Clipboard
   and in the File, Save As dialog box, use CTRL+V several times.

3. Open the Backup Utility from the Administrative Tools group.

4. Backup the \TEST directory.

5. Select Window, Tapes.

6. Open the folder containing the backup of the \TEST directory.

7. Open the Test folder.

The filename will extend beyond the edge of the screen.
