SYMPTOMS

When you run Nslookup.exe at a command prompt, you receive the following error message after the DNS request times out:

*** Can't find server name for address 127.0.0.1: Timed out
*** Default servers are not available
Default Server: Unknown
Address: 127.0.0.1

CAUSE

You have no DNS server specified in your TCP/IP Properties. If you have no DNS server configured on your client, Nslookup will default to the local loopback address. Other utilities may react similarly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you need to configure a DNS server on your client by performing the following steps:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click the Network icon.

  2. Click Protocols, click TCP/IP Protocol, and then click Properties.

  3. Click DNS, click Add, and then type the IP address of your DNS server.

  4. Click Add, click OK, and then click OK again.
