Setup Fails with 16 or 32 BIOS Drives

SYMPTOMS

Setup fails before the flex-boot menu is displayed when 16 or 32 BIOS drives are installed. An error message similar to the following is displayed:

   Couldn't open drive...

If the number of disks being reported at location 0040:0075 is changed to 2, the system starts fine.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1. This problem was corrected in the latest U.S. Service Pack for Windows NT and Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1.
