The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Windows NT operating system version 3.1
  • Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server version 3.1

SYMPTOMS

When you install WordPerfect 6.0 for Windows on a DEC Alpha or MIPS R4000 computer the installation fails and the following error message appears:

Application Error: INSTALL caused an Illegal Instruction in module
   INSTALL.EXE at 0001:03E6."

CAUSE

When Windows NT runs on a RISC processor such as the DEC Alpha or MIPS R4000, 16-bit Windows emulation only supports standard mode.

The code for WordPerfect 6.0 for Windows INSTALL.EXE includes specific Intel 386 instructions, which will not run on the 286 emulator provided under Windows NT on the RISC-based platforms.
