When you try to open a document in Word, the following error message may occur:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If you click the Details button in the error dialog box, the following
message appears:
WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in module WINWORD.EXE...
If the document contains complex graphics or drawing objects that have been grouped numerous times, Word may not be able to effectively parse the file and open it.
Because of the new design of the File Open dialog box in Word for Windows 95, Word filters each file to provide the preview and to detect if the file is password protected. This process is more thorough than the same process in Word 6.x for Windows.
Method 1: If you have access to Word version 6.x for Windows, open the file
in Word 6.x and follow the procedure listed below to redefine the
drawing object or graphic:
a. Open the document in Word 6.x.
b. On the Drawing toolbar, click the Select Drawing Objects
button.
c. Click and drag the area around the entire drawing or graphic.
d. On the Drawing toolbar, click the Ungroup button.
e. Repeat this process until the message "This command is not
available because no groups are selected" appears in the
status bar.
f. On the Drawing toolbar, click the Select Drawing Objects
button and select the entire area surrounding the drawing
objects or graphic.
g. On the Drawing toolbar, click the Group button. This provides
only one level of grouping.
h. Save the document and open it in Word 7.0.
Method 2: If you don't have access to Word version 6.x for Windows, follow
the procedure listed below to redefine the drawing object or
graphic:
a. Start PowerPoint for Windows 95, version 7.0.
b. Open a blank slide.
c. On the Insert menu, click Object.
d. Click Create From File and select the document.
e. Save the file as a PowerPoint Presentation.
f. On the View menu, click Notes Pages.
g. Click the inserted object to select it. On the Edit menu,
click Copy.
h. Start Word for Windows 95.
i. In a blank document, click Paste on the Edit menu.
j. On the Drawing toolbar, click the Select Drawing Objects
button.
k. Click and drag the area around the entire drawing or graphic.
l. On the Drawing toolbar, click the Ungroup button.
m. Repeat this process until the message "This command is not
available because no groups are selected" appears in the
status bar.
n. On the Drawing toolbar, click the Select Drawing Objects
button and select the entire area surrounding the drawing
objects or graphic.
