The information in this article applies to:
In the Find File search results window, Word may display the following error message:
Word cannot open the document <path\filename.htm>
This error occurs when you select an HTML document while you have Preview
selected in the View box or when you try to open an HTML file from the
search results window. If you close the search results window and use the
Open command (File menu) to open the HTML document, you will again receive
the error message.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Assistant for Word, version 1.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
Use one of the following procedures to open the HTML document:
Method 1: Exit and restart Word. From the File menu, choose Open and select
the HTML document.
Method 2: Exit Word and rename your WINWORD.OPT file. Restart Word and
choose Open from the File menu.
Note: When using either method above, if you use Find File to locate the
file, you will get the error again, and you will need to repeat one of the
above methods to open your file.
