The information in this article applies to:
Word may hang (stop responding) either when you insert a link to a foreign object (any file that is not a Word document) or when you double-click a linked object to edit it. This problem occurs when the linked object is located on an NT server.
The object packager hangs and does not return focus to Word when it cannot activate the object.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 7.0 for Windows 95. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
After your system hangs, press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up the Task List, select Packager, and then click the End Task button. Switch to Word, save and close your document, and then exit and restart Word.
To edit the object, do one of the following:
Method 1: Open and edit the object in another program.
Method 2: Place the object file in a folder on the workstation, open
Word, and reinsert the linked object.
