In Microsoft Excel, cell notes may become corrupted when one worksheet cell has multiple notes. In addition ,the following error may be displayed when you open the file:
File Error: data may have been lost.
After this error message occurs, cell notes will be incorrect or lost.
This problem occurs you copy and paste cells with notes such that some cells overlap in the copy and paste ranges.
To avoid this problem, make sure that when you copy and paste cells with notes, that you paste the copied cells to a non-overlapping range. Note that once you do this, you can then copy from that range and paste to the desired range.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Excel version 5.0 for Windows, Microsoft Excel version 5.0 for Windows NT and Microsoft Excel version 5.0 for the Macintosh. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
