SUMMARY
In Microsoft Excel, if you move a data label or a trendline equation
on a chart, that label or equation may disappear when you change the
data that the chart was created from.
CAUSE
When you move a data label or a trendline equation on a chart, the distance
you move (offset) the label or equation is stored and is used when you
change the data in the chart. You cannot detach a data label or trendline
equation from a data point: the label or equation moves relative to the
changing data. This relative movement may cause your data labels or
trendline equations to move off of the chart area when you change the data
you created your chart from.
WORKAROUNDS
To Restore a Data Label or Trendline Equation
To restore a data label or a trendline equation that has disappeared
because your chart data changed, do the following:
- Select the plot area for the chart.
- Drag one of the corner handles on the selected plot area in to scale
your chart to a smaller size.
- Select the label or equation that is located outside the plot area (that
part that was previously hidden) and drag it back to the plot area.
- Select the chart plot area, and drag one of the corner handles on the
selected plot area to scale the chart back to the original size.
To Restore a Trendline Equation Only
To restore a trendline equation that has disappeared because of
changing chart data, you can use the above workaround, or you can
remove the trendline equation and add it back as follows:
- Select the trendline on your chart.
- From the Format menu, choose Selected Trendline.
- Select the Options tab, and clear the Display Equation On Chart check
box. Choose OK.
- From the Format menu, choose Selected Trendline.
- Select the Options tab, and select the Display Equation On Chart check
box. Choose OK.
