SYMPTOMS

In versions 4.0, 5.0, and 5.1 of Word for the Macintosh, you cannot update or cancel more than one link at a time, regardless of the source of the link.

To update linked information, you must select each item individually.

WORKAROUND

Word 5.x

To cancel all links in a Word document, save the file as Word for Windows 1.x document. Graphics will not be converted, and all links will be lost. Reopen the document in Word for the Macintosh.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. This problem has been corrected in Word 6.0 for the Macintosh.

MORE INFORMATION

Word 5.x

Linked information is created with the OLE feature. OLE objects are surrounded by gray brackets.

Word 4.0

Linked information is created with the Paste Link command. These objects contain a header line and the actual linked information (such as a table from Microsoft Excel or a graphic from SuperPaint). The paragraph following the header is considered part of the linked information.
