Changing to Landscape Orientation Causes Short Pause

ID: q120235

The information in this article applies to:

SYMPTOMS

In Word 6.0 for the Macintosh, a pause (a "time-out" before you get control back [that is, get a blinking insertion point]) may occur when you do any of the following:

CAUSE

Word evaluates the available fonts after you change the orientation to landscape or change the printer driver. The more fonts you have, the longer the pause, as the pause length is directly proportional to the number of fonts you have installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

Removing extra unnecessary fonts alleviates this problem because the problem is directly proportional to the number of fonts you have installed on the system.

Each time you change drivers, however, the pause will still occur.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 6.0 for the Macintosh. Enhancements in enumerating fonts in Word version 6.0.1 make this much less noticeable.

In the case of changing to Landscape orientation and opening documents with sections formatted for the Landscape orientation, this problem was corrected in Word version 6.0.1 for the Macintosh.
