The information in this article applies to:
In Word 6.0, when you compare one version of a document to another document that does not have an extension, Word does not mark any revisions in the first document.
In Word 2.x, when you compare a document that has an extension to one that does not, Word generates the following error if the document does not include a period after the filename:
This document does not exist.
If the filename includes a period, Word 2.x marks the revisions but does
not indicate whether the revisions were deleted or added.
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions 2.x, 6.0, and 6.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
Rename the file that does not have an extension so that it includes an extension; then run Compare Versions.
