SUMMARY

In Word, you can put a complete border around a table and surrounding text by treating the table as a graphic.

Use the following as an example:

This is text. This is text. This is text. This is text.
This is text. This is text. This is text. This is text.
             |-----------------|
             |-----------------| This is the table.
             |-----------------|
This is text. This is text. This is text. This is text.
This is text. This is text. This is text. This is text.

Word 5.x

  1. Select the table.

  2. Press COMMAND+OPTION+D to copy the table as a graphic.

  3. Select the table, click Table Layout on the Format menu, and click Delete.

  4. On the Edit menu, click Paste to paste in the table as a graphic.

  5. Select the text, which now includes the table graphic.

  6. On the Format menu, click Border.

  7. Apply the desired border style.

Word 4.0

  1. Select the table.

  2. Press COMMAND+OPTION+D to copy the table as a graphic.

  3. Select the table, click Table on the Edit menu, and click Delete.

  4. On the Edit menu, click Paste to paste in the table as a graphic.

  5. Select the text, which now includes the table graphic.

  6. On the Format menu, click Paragraph.

  7. Choose Borders and apply the desired border style.

There will now be one complete border around the text and the table. However, the table can't be edited in Word 4.0, and it can be edited only in the Picture window in Word 5.x or 6.0.
