Custom Fonts Not Printing Smart Quotes and Apostrophes

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 3.0, 3.01, 3.02, 4.0, 5.0, 5.1, 6.0

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Word, a custom font may display a square box or an unrecognizable character on the screen and in print preview when you type an apostrophe or quotation mark if the Smart Quotes option is selected in the Preferences dialog box (on the Tools menu in 5.0 or the Edit menu in 4.0). If this occurs, the font will not print the quotation mark or apostrophe from Word even though the font may correctly display the character in Key Caps and in other applications.

CAUSE

Word uses ASCII codes for smart quotes. If the custom font does not have the ASCII codes for smart quotes defined, typing a quotation mark results in unrecognized characters that will not be printed.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, do the following:

  1. In Word 6.0, from the Tools menu, choose AutoCorrect. In Word 5.x, from the Tools menu, choose Preferences. In Word 4.0, from the Edit menu, choose Preferences.

  2. In Word 6.0, click to clear the "Change Straight Quotes to Smart Quotes" check box. In all other versions, clear the "Smart Quotes" check box.
