Custom Setup Overwrites Word Registration Information File

SUMMARY

When you run the custom installation for Word version 2.0b or 2.0c for Windows, Setup creates a new version of the WW20.REG file, which overwrites the original WW20.REG file. The new WW20.REG file contains information only for those options that you most recently installed. If you do not install all the options, the new WW20.REG file is incomplete.

If you then use the new, incomplete WW20.REG file to rebuild your Windows 3.1 REG.DAT file, you may lose some functionality, such as drag-and-drop printing or embedding Microsoft Draw files or equations from Microsoft Equation Editor.

Workaround

To fully restore a WW20.REG file that has been overwritten with incomplete registration information, do the following:

1. Start the Word Setup program.

2. Choose Custom Installation.

3. From this list, choose all the items that are already installed or 

   that you now want to install:

      Microsoft Word
      Equation Editor
      MS Draw
      MS Graph
      WordArt
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word 2.0b and 2.0c. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.

WW20.REG is a registration file used as a backup for information kept in the REG.DAT file. WW20.REG contains complete registration information for all the applications or utilities listed in the REG.DAT file, and can be used to rebuild a damaged or deleted REG.DAT file.
