The information in this article applies to:
The Microsoft Windows version 3.0 and 3.1 Button Face, Button Shadow, and Button Text settings affect the appearance of the toolbar, the status bar and the tab alignment button (Word version 6.0 only) in Word for Windows. If you change the gray Button Face color, the toolbar buttons and the status bar display in the new color. The WIN.INI button color settings also affect the dark gray shadow for the toolbar buttons and the black text for the toolbar and status bar.
Button colors can be modified directly in the Colors section of the Control Panel in the Microsoft Windows operating system version 3.1.
The default color settings are as follows:
Button Face = Gray
Button Shadow = Dark Gray
Button Text = Black
You cannot change these items directly from the Windows version
3.0 Colors icon in the Control Panel. To change the button colors, use
Windows Notepad or the Sysedit application to edit the [Colors]
section of the WIN.INI file:
ButtonFace=192 192 192
ButtonShadow=130 130 130
ButtonText=0 0 0
The above WIN.INI settings are the default values for the button
colors. If these values are changed, the toolbar and status bar
colors will be affected.
Note: The toolbar button face color will not change colors if the following setting is listed under the [Microsoft Word 2.0] heading in your WIN.INI file:
LoadToolbarBitmaps=1 or LoadToolbarBitmaps=yes
This setting is used to load custom toolbar buttons. When this setting
is in effect, the toolbar button face color does not change to the
setting in Control Panel Colors.
