SYMPTOMS

When you use the mouse to drag-and-drop a vertical block of text, Word copies instead of moves the text to the new location. This functionality worked correctly in Word version 2.0.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions 6.0 and 6.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

WORKAROUNDS

Method 1: Select the text, choose Cut from the Edit menu, move the

          insertion point to the new location, and choose Paste from the
          Edit menu.

Method 2: Select the text, click the Cut button on the Standard toolbar,

          move the insertion point to the new location, and click the Paste
          button on the Standard toolbar.

MORE INFORMATION

To select a vertical block of text in Word versions 6.0 and 6.0a, place the insertion point on the top left of the text area, press and hold the ALT key while dragging over the text with the left mouse button. After the text is selected, release the ALT key and the mouse button. When you then drag the selected text to the new location the status bar will indicate, "Move to Where?" However, the text will be copied instead of moved.
