SYMPTOMS

Regardless of the color capabilities of your video card and driver, Word for Windows displays a maximum of 16 colors in the Fill Color and Line Color palettes on the Drawing toolbar. The remaining boxes in the palette are dithered gray.

CAUSE

The picture editor in Word does not support the extended, or "true color," capabilities available in many video cards. Word supports up to 16 colors as long as your video card also supports these colors.

Word supports the 16 colors defined for the Color argument of the CharColor WordBasic statement. To display this list of 16 colors, see the "CharColor, CharColor()" topic in online WordBasic Help. (To display this topic, choose Contents from the Help menu and select the "Programming with Microsoft Word" topic. Select the "Statements and Functions Index" topic, choose the C button, and then select the "CharColor, CharColor()" topic.)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word versions 6.0 and 6.0a for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
