SYMPTOMS

When you try to start a wizard in Word for Windows, you may receive the following error message:

Error 1025: Cannot open the document

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you are not loading Share in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

RESOLUTION

Word version 6.0 requires that you load Share in order to run its wizards if you are running Word under Windows 3.1.

To add SHARE to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

1. Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

2. Add the entry below, where <dir> is the location of the directory that

   contains your MS-DOS files:

     <dir>\SHARE /L:500 /F:5100

MORE INFORMATION

To run Word 6.0 under Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.1 in standard mode, you must run the MS-DOS SHARE command before starting Windows. Word uses Share for object linking and embedding (OLE) version 2.0 operations. Specifically, Share provides the range-locking functionality that Word uses in compound files. Word 6.0 will not start under Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups 3.1 in standard mode unless SHARE.EXE is loaded.

You do not need SHARE.EXE if you run Word under Windows for Workgroups 3.1 in enhanced (386) mode or Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Windows for Workgroups uses a comparable file-sharing utility called VSHARE.386. Word 6.0a includes a version of VSHARE.386 for Windows 3.1 users. If you are using Word 6.0a and operating Windows in the 386 Enhanced mode, VSHARE.386 replaces the need to load the MS-DOS SHARE utility. Similarly, you do not need SHARE.EXE if you run Word under Windows NT because this operating system includes built-in range-locking functionality.
